May Chao-Mei Hu

The youngest of ten children born to Dr. and Mrs. Cha-Mo Wang, both native Taiwanese. May is preceded in death by her husband Douglas Hu, her parents, 2 sisters and 2 brothers. May is survived by one brother in Australia, two sisters living in Taiwan, one sister in Japan, and one sister in California. Her 18 nieces and nephews and many grand-nieces and grand-nephews can be found in many countries around the world. May is also survived by six brothers-in-law & sisters-in-law, and their families, some in the United States, some in Taiwan. May grew up in Gang-Shan, near Kaohsiung City in southern Taiwan, in a three-story brick and stone building which also functioned as the Tai-Yuan Medical Clinic, founded by her father. Dr. Wang would close the clinic during mealtime so that the family could eat together. A renowned physician, her father died in his prime when May was still in elementary school. Her mother continued to live in the family home until her death at the age of 105. After high school, May attended college in Taipei, studying Theater Art. There she met and fell in love with Douglas Hu, marrying him soon after graduating. May then began working as a middle school teacher. Douglas' sister, who had immigrated to Huntsville, Alabama, invited the couple to join her in the United States. After moving to Alabama they opened the May Flower Restaurant in Athens and worked together for many years. They were forced to close when Douglas' ailing health prevented him from continuing to work, and he passed away after an extended illness in the late 90's. To support her son and herself, May learned to drive and began working at Athens Pharmacy in 1999, and later moving to Westside Pharmacy in 2006. Her kindness and love for others will always be remembered, as well as the great strength she showed after the death of her husband and during the illness of her son. Her sweet voice and tender smile will be greatly missed by those who knew her. Visitation will be Thursday, July 17, 2014 from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, contributions in May’s memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association, PO Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312, or if you wish, do something nice for someone in May’s honor.
