Joe Mitchell Holman “Pops”, resident of Athens since 2005, passed away early Tuesday morning at Athens-Limestone Regional Hospital in the Emergency Room. He succumbed to heart failure. He was 77. Services for Mr. Holman are Saturday, November 30, 2013 at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be Saturday, November 30, 2013 from 9:00 until 10:45 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. Mr. Holman was born in Willow Grove, TN on April 27, 1936. He was the eldest child of Clarence and Ruth Holman and spent his adolescent years in Columbia, TN with his two younger siblings, David Clark Holman and Jane Holman Simmons. A dedicated husband, he married Mary Louise Johnson Holman of Memphis on June 20, 1958 and they enjoyed 55 wonderful years together. He was a devoted and loving father of three children, Jodi Melane born 1959, Mitchell Clay born 1960, and Mary Lynn born 1963. Mr. Holman was known for his scholarly pursuit of many subjects and enjoyed a thirst for knowledge throughout his life. As an undergraduate, he attended David Lipscomb and Vanderbilt Universities in Nashville. In 1958, he graduated from the University of Tennessee School of Pharmacy in Memphis. As a pharmacist, he practiced his profession in many forms. He served his country as Lieutenant J. G. in the United Public Health Service in New Orleans, LA and in Talihina, OK. He served the community of Columbia, TN at the Derryberry Drug Store from 1960 to 1983. In 1983, he returned to the UT School of Pharmacy to study Research and Development. He aided the advancement of medicine at Kansas City Hospital Pharmacy, Kansas City, KS, E. R. Scribb in Brunswick, NJ, and Buroughs Wellcome in Greeneville, NC as research and development pharmacist until his retirement in 1995. Joe Mitchell Holman was an enduring and faithful member of the Church of Christ. He served as deacon at the Lynnville Church of Christ (TN). He led as an elder at River Road Church of Christ in Washington, NC. In Athens, he attended Marion Street Church of Christ and placed membership at West Hobbs Street Church of Christ in 2007. He is survived by his wife, Mary Louise Johnson Holman, Athens, AL; his children: Jodi Beene, Mitch and Sharon Holman, Savannah, GA, and Lynn and David Weatherford, Athens, AL; nine of his ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, his siblings: David and Leslie Holman and Jane and Steve Simmons, his nieces and nephews, and his friends and church family. He will also be missed by his cherished dog, Doodle Dove. He is predeceased by his parents, Clarence and Ruth Holman and his grandson, Andrew Dake Weatherford.
