Thomas "Thunder" Nelson

August 3, 1948 - January 27, 2022

Thomas “Thunder” Nelson, 73, of Elkmont, passed away on Thursday, January 27th, 2022, at Athens-Limestone Hospital. Mr. Nelson was born on August 3rd, 1948, to Eldon Leander and Violet Elizabeth Nelson. Mr. Nelson is survived by his wife of forty-five years, Susan Ball Nelson of Elkmont, AL; daughter Kerri Truett (Jason) of Elkmont, AL; grandsons Brayden Truett and William Truett; and sisters Barbara Nelson of Elkmont, AL and Carolyn Nelson of Elkmont, AL. Preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Edward Nelson and James Nelson. Thomas devoted himself to setting a Christian example and living each day serving the Lord. He was a proud Vietnam Veteran of the Navy, graduate of the Huntsville Police Academy with highest honors in his class, and bravely served in law enforcement for over 40 years. He was proud to serve and never wavered in his selfless commitments. Thomas loved his family with everything he had. Thunder cherished his wife with a love that held them together for forty-five years. They held hands every day and never left I love you unsaid. Words can’t describe their love story of kindness and love. He loved his daughter with his all and was the best daddy a girl could possibly have. He was proud of his daughter, son-in-law, and OH, those grandsons! He was the proudest pawpaw you will find - never missing a ballgame, special moment, or opportunity to take them on a four-wheeler ride. He so bravely battled cancer for several months without a single complaint or missing an opportunity to still focus on the comfort of those around him. Thunder was a gentle, loving, Christian man that will be missed by his family and friends beyond measure. Funeral services for Mr. Nelson will be Monday, January 31st, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home, with Mike Richardson officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, January 30th, 2022, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Roselawn Cemetery.
