Nellie Dean Mitchell

May 20, 1934 - January 24, 2022

Nellie Dean Mitchell (Craig) was born May 20, 1934, to James Thomas Craig and Mariah Craig at their family home on Elk River Mill Road. At the age of 13, she became a Christian and began a lifelong walk with her Savior. She enjoyed working as a clerical assistant for Bennie Lee Fudge at the CEI Bookstore for about eight years. Nellie Dean married Billy Mitchell of Elkmont in 1955 and they remained faithfully married for over 66 years. Mrs. Mitchell made it her goal to honor God and her husband by cultivating the “incorruptible beauty of a quiet and gentle spirit which is very precious in the sight of God.” (I Peter 3:4) Billy and Nellie Dean were blessed with two daughters, Lisa and Kathy whom they raised to be servants of God. She enjoyed helping care for her grandchildren. Mrs. Mitchell was a tender-hearted, conscientious, soft-spoken, gentle lady who always had her giggly-girl happiness ready to share with her loved ones. She was willing to stand firm in God’s Truth even when met with opposition. Nellie Dean’s fervent desire was to support Gospel preaching, help the needy, and she always wanted everyone to be right with God. She was a humble, modest person both in her clothing and her behavior. Billy and Nellie Dean became members of the newly begun Jackson Drive Church of Christ in September 1966 and remained so until her passing. Her favorite Bible verse was “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13) Funeral services for Nellie Dean Mitchell (Craig) will be 2:00 Friday, January 28, 2022, at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home. Visitation 12:00-1:45. Speaking at her funeral will be Marshall McDaniel; David Sandlin reading the obituary; and Will Stevenson leading congregational singing. Pallbearers will be: Bruce Craig, Rick George, Tim Hamilton, Steven Lynn, Tim Richter, and Tony Richter. Graveside prayer for family only at Roselawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to Hospice of Limestone County would be appreciated.
