James (Martin) Casteel

August 26, 1922 - June 24, 2010

Mr. James (Martin) Casteel was born on August 26, 1922, in eastern Lauderdale County, Alabama, to James Henry and Eula Estella Grisham Casteel. He passed away on June 24, 2010 at his home in Athens, AL. The funeral service for Mr. Casteel will be Sunday, June 27, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Limestone Chapel with David Cox and Warren Glass officiating. Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 26, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Limestone Chapel. Interment will be at Roselawn Cemetery. Mr. Casteel was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Wilda Alene Casteel Owens Davis, along with several members of his extended family, and many dear friends. Mr. Casteel was a member of Market Street Church of Christ. He lived in the Athens/Limestone area most all of his life, with the exception of only a few, relatively brief periods spent elsewhere due to military service, college and work. (The longest being six years living in Chattanooga when he worked with TVA in 1950-1956) Mr. Casteel had been retired 30 + years, but he owned a farm and raised cattle. Before his retirement, he worked as an engineer for the US Army Missile Command at Redstone Arsenal (1956-1979), and prior to that he worked as an engineer for TVA (1950-1956). Mr. Casteel went to Auburn University and received a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering in 1950. He married Hazel Wynell Adams Casteel in Iuka, MS on December 19, 1953. He is survived by his wife of 56 years Wynell Casteel of Athens, AL; Son: Dr. Gregory James Casteel of Athens, AL; Sister: “Dimple” Doss (Ken) of Decatur, AL; Lifelong friends, Lincoln and Nell Barksdale of Athens, AL; extended family of in-laws, nieces, nephews, and their children and grandchildren. Pallbearers will be nephews: Duane Adams, Steve Davis, Roger Madry, Mark Showalter, Jerry Tucker, and Wayne Tucker. Honorary pallbearers are: Adam Starnes, Dage Starnes and Shane Starnes.
