Katherine Neale Young

Athens native Katherine 'Kay' Neale Young passed away Friday November 30th at her home on the Tennessee River at the age of63. Kay was born June 28, 1949, the daughter of the late William B. and Katherine Nelson Young, and the granddaughter of the late Bruce and Sophie D. Nelson of Athens, and the late Fred H. and Sarah L. Young of South Carolina. Kay was the sister of the late Dr. Bruce Nelson Young of Athens. She is survived in death by an uncle and numerous cousins who were part of her extended family. She will be remembered by the large number of friends who loved her. Kay graduated from Athens High School in 1967. She graduated from Sullins College in Bristol, Virginia, with an AA in 1969. She graduated from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, with a BA in 1971 and Athens College with a BS in 1981. She was a business woman and farmer. Kay was a member of First United Methodist Church of Athens. Kay volunteered her time to CASA serving on the board for 15 years as both president and secretary. She was on the Athens Limestone Arts Council board. She served as co-chairman of the entertainment committee for the Hospice Chili Challenge as well as co- chairman of Let's Pretend Hospital. She was treasurer of H.U.G.S.,( help unite, guide and support for children) and she gave generously of her time to LEARN-TO-READ. She also was a Master Gardener. Kay's' greatest passion was travel and she traveled extensively throughout her life. She shared this passion with others during her employment at Cook Travel of Athens for the past 15 years. Kay embraced life and was forever curious. She was a renowned cook and loved to entertain at her river home. Kay was a creative bridge player of 40 years and will be forever missed every other Friday at 11:00. She was a lifelong animal lover and is survived by her beloved dog and 2 cats. There will be no visitation. Graveside services will be Sunday, December 09, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Athens City Cemetery with Penne Laubenthal officating. Limestone Chapel Funeral Home is handling arrangement.
