Jane Faulkner Girvin Coleman, 89, of Athens, passed away on Friday, September 6th, 2024, at Athens Health and Rehabilitation. Mrs. Coleman is survived by her son Dr. Alan W. Coleman (Lisa) of Athens, AL; daughters Mary Kay Bullard (Greg) of Warrior, AL and Laura Coleman Armstrong of Madison, AL; grandchildren Wes Coleman (Amy) of Athens, AL, Mary Ellen Mims (Charlie) of Trussville, AL, Allison Avant (Amaris) of Nashville, TN, Michael Rogers (Tori) of Florence, AL, Fran Gwaltney (George) of Birmingham, AL, and Coleman Armstrong of Huntsville, AL; and great-grandchildren Ruby Lynne Coleman, Norah Katherine Mims, and Eleanor Reese Gwaltney. She is preceded in death by her parents; and husband Dr. Curtis D. Coleman. Jane Faulkner Girvin Coleman was born on November 1st, 1934, in River Junction, Florida. Her parents were Howard William and Dorothy Stephenson Girvin. She graduated from Pensacola High School in 1952, in Pensacola, Florida. She attended Pensacola Junior College and Stetson University in Deland, Florida. On March 26th, 1955, she married Curtis Dwight Coleman at St. Mark Methodist Church in Pensacola, Florida. Together, they had three children: Alan Wesley, Mary Kay, and Laura Ann. Mrs. Coleman graduated from Athens College, in Athens, Alabama, in 1968, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. She taught second and fifth grades at Athens Elementary and Brookhill Elementary in the Athens City School system. Over Mrs. Coleman’s 25 years of teaching, she made an impact on so many children’s lives. Mrs. Coleman was very active in the United Methodist Church, including serving as the president of the United Methodist Women. She was an avid reader and was a member of the Quest Book Club. Also, she was a volunteer for the American Red Cross at Athens Limestone Hospital. Mrs. Coleman was very instrumental with the compilation of devotional of her beloved husband’s book, “Stop, Look, and Listen.” Dr. Coleman’s dedication of the book to her was a testament to that. Faith, family, and friends, were always the priorities for Jane and Curtis Coleman. Mrs. Coleman was very involved in UMCOR with the United Methodist Disaster Relief through the North Alabama Conference. Funeral services for Mrs. Coleman will be Friday, September 13th, 2024, at 3:00 p.m., at Athens First Methodist Church, with Dr. Robert White officiating. Visitation will be Friday, from 2:00-2:50 p.m. at the church. Pallbearers will be Wes Coleman, Michael Rogers, Charlie Mims, Coleman Armstrong, George Gwaltney, and Bob Allfrey.
